Position Information
Description: Under general supervision, performs all duties of a firefighter trainee which includes exterior fireground tasks with no exposure to Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH) environments. Trainee may also participate in training evolutions involving interior fireground tasks and limited IDLH atmospheres once initial training in personal protective equipment (PPE) including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) has taken place. This training should take place under the direct supervision of a certified live fire training instructor. Trainee should also complete regular training sessions involving all aspects of firefighter job requirements. Trainee may assist in administering minor first aid to sick or accident victims. Trainee performs maintenance work on the fire station and department vehicles as required. Reports to the Lieutenant.

Training and Qualifications: Prior to employment, applicant must: (1) be in good physical condition as determined by a medical examination, (2) be capable of performing the minimum physical requirements of this position as required by the Georgia Firefighters Standards and Training Council and/or department policy, (3) prove negative drug use by certified drug screen, (4) possess a valid driver’s license, (5) be at least 18 years of age, (5) possess a high school diploma [or GED equivalent], (6) be of good moral character, without felony convictions within the previous ten years, as determined by a background/criminal investigation, (7) obtain firefighter I certification meeting Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council Standards within (1) one year of employment.

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to assist and carry disabled persons and operate a variety of firefighting and rescue equipment, such as the jaws of life, set and climb ladders, hose clamp, chock blocks, foam educator, various rescue tools, extrication spreader tool, ventilation saw, etc. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. Must be able to exert up to one hundred pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to fifty pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for physically active work. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of 125 pounds for at least one hundred feet.
