Before 1826, present-day Carroll County belonged to the Creek Nation. A treaty in 1826 finalized the land transfer, leading to the creation of Carroll County that December, named for Charles Carroll of Maryland, the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence. The land was distributed by lottery in 1827, and Carrollton became the county seat in 1829. On November 14, 1829, the county seat was moved to its present site, and on December 22, the legislature incorporated the town as Carrollton.
