Position Information
Description: Under general supervision, performs all duties of a firefighter which includes fighting fires, performing rescue operations, providing emergency medical care, mitigation of hazardous materials incidents, performing salvage and overhaul work, and other related duties. Completes regular training sessions and performs maintenance work on the fire station and department vehicles as required. Reports to the Captain and or Lieutenant.

Training and Qualifications: High school diploma (or GED equivalent) required; and any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position. Prior to employment, applicant must: (1) be in good physical condition as determined by a medical examination, (2) be capable of performing the minimum physical requirements of this position as required by the Georgia Firefighters Standards and Training Council and/or department policy, (3) prove negative drug use by certified drug screen, (4) be of good moral character, without felony convictions within the previous ten years, as determined by a background/criminal investigation, (5) possess a valid and appropriate driver’s license, (6) be certified as a Firefighter I by the Georgia Firefighters Standards and Training Council, (7) be certified as a Hazardous Materials Technician by Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council [or obtain certification within a specific time period].

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to assist and carry disabled persons and operate a variety of firefighting and rescue equipment, such as the jaws of life, set and climb ladders, hose clamp, chock blocks, foam educator, various rescue tools, extrication spreader tool, ventilation saw, etc. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. Must be able to exert up to one hundred pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to fifty pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for physically active work. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of 125 pounds for at least one hundred feet. Must be able to dress and work in a level “A” fully encapsulated hazardous materials suit with a self contained breathing apparatus.
